In summer of 2013, I volunteered with Seeds of Hope, a nonprofit dedicated to the safety and rehabilitation of sexually exploited or at-risk children in Costa Rica. I lived at the shelter, where girls opened up to me with horrific stories of being sold into prostitution, losing children, and even being shot at for being associated with drug dealers. At the time, it was difficult to come up with the right words to say in response to their stories. Upon returning to the U.S., I wrote this song. "What I Deserve" is everything I would say to these girls.
